Glass of Sass: Making Grocery Shopping Less Sucky

Glass of SassCheck out the latest Q&A in our new Glass of Sass column. We know our sassy fans have questions, and we've already poured a glass of wine so we're ready to fire off some answers!

Got a question of your own? Send it in and we will answer it in a future column!

Q:I read your column last week and was so excited to find out about your shopping list! Do you have any other tips or tricks for making grocery shopping easier?

A:We're thrilled to hear you read our column like our shopping list! We totally find it helpful and are glad when other people agree.

So you want some more shopping tips? Makes sense - grocery shopping is unfortunately something we need to do, whether we like it or not. Check out our tips for making it easier:

  • Always use a list. Our shopping list is broken out by store layout, which prevents you having to run back and forth all over the store. If you prefer to write your own list, take the time to reorganize it according to the layout of your store before you leave home. You'll save an average of 5 minutes and it will only take you 1 minute to write the list.
  • Stock up. Look around your house for anything you're starting to run low on and if it's something that won't go bad quickly, grab it while you're already at the store. No need to make 5 separate trips during the week because you forgot something!
  • Do your shopping on the same day every week. Pick a day and time of the week that are low volume (for example, Tuesday nights) that works with your schedule. Once you're in a routine it won't seem so bad - you'll know it's on the schedule and you'll know when you'll be done with it so you don't have to worry about it the rest of the week. You may need to supplement this trip with a quick weekend stop-in for some fresh veggies or meat, but the trip will be much faster since you've gotten your bulk shopping done.
  • Research products in advance. If you're trying one of our easy recipes, print off the shopping list with images. If you're using a coupon for a new product you'd like to try, look at the picture and read the fine print. If you want to try some new tooth whitening gel, look up some info online first. It's much easier to get certain information in the comfort of your home, instead of getting frustrated running all over the store trying to find something specific.
  • Don't go to the store when you're hungry. Aside from the old diet tip that says to avoid this so you don't have too many impulse buys, it's just a good idea to not go to the store if your tummy is rumbling - you'll be focused on that instead of efficient shopping. Plus if you're anything like us, you'll be grumpy and the whole experience will be more irritating.
None of this is rocket science but it sure makes our shopping trips more pleasant. Happy shopping!

It's Spa Week!!

Other than the Chilean miners being rescued this week (thank goodness they're all safe!) the most amazing news is that it's SPA WEEK, October 11-17. This is not just permission - it's your duty - to have a spa treatment at someplace fabulous - mani, pedi, massage, facial, body wrap, whatever little pick-me-up moves you!

In honor of this week, Vicki and I have decided to give our famously hot sous chef & intern, Bradley Cooper, the week off from foot massage duty. Instead we're going to treat him to a little spa treatment. Jealous girls? You should be!

And when you make a sassified, simple FunnySpoon meal for dinner no one will ever know you spent the better part of the afternoon relaxing!

Enjoy ... and happy hump day!

(Gratuitous eye candy. You're welcome!)

Be Green ... Not Gross!

We're all trying to be nice to our planet: reduce our waste, recycle whenever possible, reuse products, etc. Right? Right!

And as a part of this, I'm sure you're using canvas, reusable grocery totes, right? Did you know that these bags, while great for the environment, need a little TLC from your washing machine every once in a while? It's true - they grab little pieces of bacteria and contaminants from the groceries & produce you put in them, hold onto them and attach them to the next round of groceries. So while they probably don't need to be laundered as often as your kids' smelly soccer clothes, you should wash them about once per month. Toss them in with the sheets and towels and keep your family healthy & safe from icky, weird food bacteria!

Want a sassy FunnySpoon grocery tote? Just share one of your fave recipes, with a photo, and we'll send you a tote like one of these!

You're My Obsession

We're starting a new series about our newest grocery store finds, incredible new shortcuts and, ultimately, our latest obsession.

This week we're spotlighting GREEK YOGURT. This likely isn't a new product to many of you - it's been around for quite some time. It has historically been something you found in health food and all-natural stores. I don't know about you, but that's not where I usually do my frenzied grocery shopping. However, recently it's popping up on the shelves of every grocery store around. There are a few brands from the health food stores (like Chobani) appearing in mainstream groceries and now, even better, our friends at Dannon and Yoplait are getting on the bandwagon, too.

What's the big deal with Greek Yogurt, you ask? Well, it's packed with protein. A typical container of Yoplait yogurt has 5 grams of protein while Greek yogurt contains 12. TWELVE grams of protein! That will keep you filled up and focused for hours.

Greek yogurt comes in tons of flavors (vanilla, honey, strawberry, blueberry, etc) and is perfect with granola and fruit for breakfast, a snack or lunch. And ... my picky 4 year old loves it. As a bonus: Chobani is developing a whole line of 'Carrie-friendly' flavors like chocolate. Whoops, I meant kid-friendly!

So, what are you waiting for? Give it a whirl. I'm sure you'll love it. And if not, you'll at least get a protein-packed snack instead of a handful of M&Ms.

"Jam"ming cocktails

Ever wanted to make a little fruity concoction for yourself only to find that you're out of juice? Well, it happens quite frequently at my house. Those toddlers consume all the good juice before I ever get a chance to use it for a cocktail. However, no fear. As long as you've got some jam, preserves or jelly in your fridge then you're good to go.

It may sound a little weird, but it'll give you a nice sweet flavor without being too overpowering. All you need is a cocktail shaker, ice, vodka (my personal fave) with any flavor of jam, like raspberry, and a little sprite or soda water for a nice, refreshing cocktail.

I like to call this little gem a Rasberry Jammer. Silly name, but a nice way to kick off a Friday evening. And while you're starting your Friday Happy Hour you should probably pair this with these Fruit & Cheese Bites. Nice snack for the kiddos and a great complement to the cocktail.

So, have you tried jam in a cocktail? How did your experiment go?

Mise en place = smart cooking!

Have you heard the saying 'mise en place'? It's a fancy french phrase that literally means "putting in place". Really it's a phrase used by chefs that refers to prepping & organizing their ingredients and cook stations prior to their shift - preparing cuts of meat, sauces, spices, chopped veggies - and having them all at the ready when orders begin rolling in.

However, this five dollar french phrase isn't just for professional chefs - you can have a mise en place, too! It's basic planning that will help make preparing any meal - for 2 or for 20 - much smoother. Most recipes have time constraints so any advanced preparation will allow you to cook without stopping. Personally I can't tell you how many times I've made sure I had all the ingredients, began cooking only to realize that I needed the two onions to be finely diced or the fresh Parmesan to be grated - those things take quite a bit of time and put the brakes on all the rest of the cooking.

Here are some quick steps for creating your own mise en place:

  • Read your recipe. Sounds simple right? A surprising number of cooks don't read the complete recipe prior to starting to cook. A quick 45 second review will help you make sure you have all the proper ingredients and tools. And you'll know if you need to grate that fresh Parmesan or not!

  • Prepare all ingredients. If you spend 15 minutes slicing, dicing and grating prior to starting you reduce the risk of burning the chicken while you're dicing the tomatoes, over cooking the pasta while you're grating the Parmesan and serving cold meals because you're finishing up part while the rest is sitting on the plate.
Oh ... and there are all sorts of cute prep bowls you can for your mise to make your cooking a little more festive. But as you know - any old bowl will work!

  • Pull out all tools. It's helpful to have the mixer, food processor, soaked wooden skewers, etc. at the ready when you're in the midst of cooking. It will help streamline your cooking and prevent you from digging in the cabinets looking for misplaced, seldom used gadgets or assembling anything.

  • Keep yourself organized. Keep all your ingredients within reach of the stove or counter where you're cooking so you can see them and quickly access them. This will help keep you focused when all the other uncontrollable interruptions happen - soccer balls coming into the kitchen, phone ringing, child crying, etc.

So go ahead, get your kitchen set up with a mise en place and start cooking like a pro. Even for simple recipes a teensy bit of preparation will make the meal better and, likely, the experience more enjoyable.

Meatless Monday: Picking Your Veggies

We've posted this before, but it's very relevant now that all the gardens are popping with fresh spring and summer veggies. It's time to figure out where you should be shopping and what you should be eating, right?

Everyone always says fresh is best when it comes to most food - especially fruits and veggies. But is it? This is a much debated topic and I thought I'd share my perspective. Not saying my opinions are scientifically accurate ... they're simply the rules I try to live by.

  • Buy local. Fruits and veggies are always best if you can buy them at your local farmer's market or if they come from your backyard. You know where they've come from and how far they've traveled. Strawberries from a farm 10 miles away are much better than berries shipped in from Costa Rica (you can assume they're at least a few days off the vine by the time they make it to your grocery). And you're being much friendlier to the environment by buying locally.

  • Buy fresh, seasonal at the grocery. It's simple, eat corn on the cob in July, not December. Seasonal items are going to be grown more 'naturally' resulting in much better taste and much lower prices!

  • Buy frozen. If something isn't in season and you've just got to have it, i.e. corn on the cob, buy frozen. Many times frozen fruits and veggies are fresher than the "fresh" produce because they're picked, processed and immediately frozen - many times within the same day. Whereas "fresh" produce is picked, sits in a warehouse, is shipped to your grocery, sits in the storeroom and then is placed out in the produce bins (and sometimes it might sit there for a few days, too). Frozen is fresh, healthy and won't easily go bad so it's simple to always have something on hand and easy to eat your veggies!

  • (Avoid) Canned. This is usually my last resort. I've found that canned fruits and veggies are usually mushy and LOADED with salt, sugar and preservatives. However, in a pinch they're always good to have on hand! We typically have black beans and tomatoes on hand, but I tend to be very cautious about anything beyond that. Sorry canned veggies!

So there you have it. My unofficial fruit and veggie rules. What are your preferences and how do you buy your fruits and veggies?

Pizza Joint Ordering Guide

Our friends at Eat This, Not That shared some great information this week about the do's and don'ts of ordering at a pizza joint and we had to share it with you.

9 Ways to Eat Healthy at the Pizzeria
Here's what every child should be taught in health class: how to order a pizza. After all, the average American gobbles up 23 pounds of this takeout favorite every year. Your pre-emptive plan of attack: Use these nine simple rules to order smart at any pizza joint.

  • Choice of Crust
Your goal here is to minimize the number of empty carbohydrates that go into your pie. Pan crust is by far the worst, and it can easily add 1,000 empty calories to your pie. Thin crust is not only best for you, but it's also the most loyal interpretation of true Italian pizza.

  • Personal Pan
Never fly solo at the pizza parlor, since appropriate portion size is not the sort of consideration that plays into the shaping of most personal pizzas. They're typically sized like serving platters and loaded with 800 calories or more.

  • Canadian Bacon
What makes bacon Canadian? It's not the country of origin. But the fact that it comes from the leaner back of the pig means it delivers twice as much protein with 60 percent less fat than normal bacon.

  • Meat Lover's Pizza
The official "Meat Lover's" moniker is owned by Pizza Hut, but you'll find pizzerias all over the country producing their own iterations of the all- meat pie. The reliance on a slew of greasy meats packs each slice with around 400 calories and 10 grams of saturated fat--double what you'll find in a slice of Hawaiian pie.

  • White Pizza
The absence of fatty meats puts this pie on the lower end of the caloric spectrum, but it's still just bread and cheese. The hallmark of the white pie is that it's served without sauce, and as it turns out, the sauce is the healthiest part of pizza. Besides being loaded with vitamin C, studies show that cooking tomatoes actually concentrates the disease-fighting lycopene found in raw tomatoes.

  • Mediterranean Pizza
This is generally among the most uniquely flavorful pies on any pizza menu. Instead of sausage or pepperoni, it earns its big flavor through a combination of artichokes, olives, sweet peppers, and sun-dried tomatoes--ingredients characterized by their antioxidants and healthy fats. Sub this in for your normal pie and you'll trade calories for flavor and nutrition.

  • Calzone
You can stuff the fat inside, but you can't make it disappear. The pocket-bread approach to pizza construction allows the chef to fold in more grease than you'd ever accept on top of your pie.

  • Pastas
Rarely is pasta better for you than pizza. Surprised? The heaping helping of noodles served by most pizza joints provides hundreds of calories' worth of refined carbohydrates, and the sauce that goes on top is generally peppered with the worst of the pizza toppings (i.e., pepperoni and sausage).

  • Garlic Knots
The cheapest item on the menu for good reason: Each knot consists of little more than a pile of flour and a thick smear of butter or oil. That means lots of quick-burning carbs and lots of calorie-dense fats. You'd be better off eating chicken wings.

Now that you're super hungry I suggest you head over to your local pizza joint ... OR better yet, try one of these fantastic at-home pizza recipes!

Snacking that helps!

Looking for a few ways to stave off your cravings and to achieve/maintain those New Year's resolution health goals? Well, we're not dieticians or nutritionists so we don't pretend to have all the answers; however, we have found a few tips over the years to help us lose a few and keep them off!

  • An apple a day: It's true, an apple a day really does help. They're chock full of fiber, help lower LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) and are proven to reduce the risk of a number of cancers. AND they'll fill you up so you don't overeat. Try eating an apple as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack so you don't gorge at mealtime.

  • Celery? Yes, celery: We love to eat celery as a mid-afternoon snack with a little bit of peanut butter or light cream cheese. It's crunchy & filling so it provides all the impact of a chip with a fraction of the calories. PLUS it's full of vitamin C, known to help reduce blood pressure and a natural diuretic. Who knew celery could do all that good stuff for you?

  • Break-Fast: Have you heard the old adage: Eat breakfast like a queen, lunch like a princess and dinner like a pauper? Well, it's true. That's how you master your metabolism. I know most of us never have time for a full, sit down breakfast, but you've got to kickoff your day WITHIN ONE HOUR of waking with breakfast. And it should be packed with protein. I like to boil a bunch of eggs on Sunday so I have them at the ready for busy mornings.

  • Pre-dinner drag: I find myself dragging a bit in the late afternoon, pre-daycare pickup. However, it's too late to have coffee because it'll keep me up all night. I drink and Emergen-C on these days. It's PACKED with Vitamin C, B6 and B12 so it's bound to help my immune system and give me a natural energy boost to keep me going through dinner and bedtime. Plus with all the fantastic flavors they have I can trick myself into thinking I got a snack!

  • Drink!: No, we're not going to preach about drinking water - you already know that! We've found that drinking warm liquids - soups, decaf teas & coffees - in the mid afternoon help you feel satiated. If you get the 3pm muchies then drink some warm (low-cal) soup, broth or tea. It really works!

What are some of your tricks to get through the day without having a meltdown at the donut counter? C'mon. Share your magical tricks with the rest of us!

You should consult your physician before beginning any diet or weight loss program to discuss any health questions or concerns.

Warm Up with Hot Tea

Did you know that January is also known as Hot Tea Month? Seems appropriate given the arctic temperatures we're experiencing all across the US! We recommend you warm up your Tuesday with a little tea - pick any flavor you like, but we love any variety of green tea. If you're trying to cut back on your sugar intake (like me) then try sweetening it with a little honey.

Or if you're looking for something to settle yourself down this evening for a long winter's nap then try chamomile tea. Perfectly soothing.

Enjoy and stay warm!

How do you use a crisper??

You know those mystery drawers in your refrigerator where fruits and veggies go to get moldy and die? They're actually called "crispers". They help keep your fruits and vegetables fresh, ripe and crisp. However, if you don't use them properly then they can do the opposite and give you soggy, sad produce. Here's a SUPER simple primer to help you enjoy fresh produce!

The rule of thumb is that if it's stored in the section of the store with the misters then it needs to go in a cripser drawer with HIGH humidity. Vegetables will dry out or get limp unless stored properly. This helps keep the water in and keep it fresh (green leafy vegetables, corn, and broccoli).

Fruit requires a lower humidity so they should be stored in the other drawer - like berries and grapes.

Onions, tomatoes, apples and bananas should stored at room temperature as the cool temperature can hasten the ripening process and slightly alter the taste (think fresh, fragrant, window-sill ripened tomato versus a cold, firm, tasteless tomato!).

Here are a few links to get all the skinny on the best way to store your produce:
- The Unclutterer
- Organics To You
- Vegetable Expert
- About.com

If stored properly, your produce should last about a week in the refrigerator. So read up, store properly and be sure you & your family enjoy all that wonderful, seasonal, fresh produce!!

Homemade Holiday Potpourri

Not quite in the holiday spirit yet? Black Friday and Cyber Monday didn't bring out your merry mirth-making energy? Never fear ... you've got plenty of time! And we've got some tips to help get you there. Like this Homemade Holiday Potpourri. It'll make your house smell like the holidays and brighten your mood. Plus it's SO simple and SO cheap!

Heat 2(ish) cups of water on medium-high heat. Add a handful of cloves and 4 or 5 cinnamon sticks. When it comes to a slow boil reduce heat to simmer/low and let it sit on the stove for a few hours. Be sure to keep an eye on it and add more water if it gets too low.

Organic coupon help is here!

I stumbled across a site FULL of links to coupons for organic & all-natural products in one of the Peaceful Daily newsletters I receive. I encourage you check out the list, bookmark it and use it frequently. You'll be happy you did (and so will the environment!).

Make a super simple dinner tonight, honor National Seafood Month and get a little shrimp in your diet with one of these SeaPak Shrimp Company meals.

Shrimp Tempura & Rice - dinner in less than 10 minutes and you'll think you're at a Japanese restaurant! (Tip: Sometimes I will make this for my husband and me and Popcorn Shrimp for the kiddos. They love the rice and edamame, but don't appreciate the delicios Tempura Shrimp as much as the grown-ups do!)

Shrimp Scampi with Peas - a fantastic dinner the whole family will love. Serve it alone or pair with crusty bread & a side salad. Everyone will ask for this again and again!

What Exactly is This FunnySpoon Thing?

I get this question a lot ... 'So, what is FunnySpoon? A recipe website?'. You'd think this would be an easy question to answer but it's actually not. I thought I'd try to break it down here for all of our new visitors as well as for our regular visitors who are still a little gray on how this site is different.

Yes, FunnySpoon is a recipe website. But it's not just any regular old, run-of-the-mill website. FunnySpoon recipes combine specific products with the best complimentary products to help create the best tasting dish. For example, the best canned tomatoes to use in the FunnySpoon Turkey Chili: Hunt's Fire Roasted because they add the perfect amount of spice and zest when paired with the other ingredients. Sure you can substitute with your personal favorite, but this is the brand & product the cook has suggested.

The other cool feature of FunnySpoon is the recipe shortcuts. Instead of following a 12 step recipe to create a soup we'll give you a kickstart with a recommendation for the perfect pre-packaged base. Not only will we save you 10 steps in the recipe, but we'll also save you 15 minutes of clean up time! We know that everyone wants to eat yummy and (fairly) nutritious meals but there simply isn't enough time to cook from scratch every day. FunnySpoon recipes help you short-cut recipes resulting in quicker prep, shorter cook time and less clean up. A perfect example of this is the Risotto Microwavo - risotto is a very laborious dish. It's amazing, but takes forever to make. This version essentially cooks itself. And after you try this you may never slave over the stove making it the traditional way again!

The goal of FunnySpoon is to help simplify the cooking and shopping process - we show you PICTURES of the products we recommend for each recipe. This makes it easier when you're shopping to quickly recognize the products on the shelf. It also guarantees that your sister in Seattle will get the same result as you do in Atlanta - national brands mean broad availability and consistency. This makes for simpler cooking. Yay for simpler cooking. That's what we all want, right?

In a nutshell, that's FunnySpoon - simple recipes made even simpler with shortcuts in the recipes. Voila. Who doesn't want a little more of that?

So ... how would you 'FunnySpoon' your family favorite recipes? Tell us. We won't tell anyone :)
