The FunnySpoon Five: Pasta & Noodles!

Pasta is a staple in most houses - it's perfect alone with a sauce, it's great in casseroles, soups, with chicken, with beef, with seafood. You name a food and some form of pasta probably goes well with it. Maybe not ice cream, but you get the gist.

Most pastas are interchangeable; however, we all have our favorites. Here are the FunnySpoon Five: Favorite Pastas & Noodles and why we love them so.

  1. Rigatoni. This is a tubular pasta. It's hearty so it holds up well to most sauces and works great in casseroles. It's so versatile and can be used as a substitute for almost any pasta in a recipe.

  2. Fusilli. Also known as the corkscrew pasta. Fusilli cooks very quickly (about 5 minutes) and holds sauces well because of its unique shape. Plus it's fun and the kids love it!

  3. Spaghetti Family. We always have a pasta from the Spaghetti family on hand - this includes angel hair, spaghetti, fettuccine, etc. I prefer to keep angel hair while Vicki prefers fettuccine. Whatever your preference this should be a staple in your pantry.

  4. Orzo. This pasta is shaped like barley or rice - it's really tiny. It's excellent for use in soups, pasta salad and as a substitute for rice or potatoes in any meal. Orzo can make your dish look elegant without complicating it.

  5. Tortellini. This tiny stuffed pasta packs a ton of flavor! They're usually stuffed with cheese or meat - we prefer the cheese since it's more versatile. You can create a comfort meal in no time with tortellini, sauce and a side salad. Delish!

Remember, it's important to properly cook your pasta. Over-cooking or under-cooking just leads to soggy, sticky or crunchy pasta. Take a peek at this primer on all things pasta for simple, easy-to-follow instructions.
