Eco-Friendly Week: The FunnySpoon Five - Eco-Friendly Choices

We're kicking of Eco-Friendly Week here at FunnySpoon. Throughout the week we'll be giving you info and tips that you can work into your daily routine. Feel free to share any tips of your own in the comments!

The FunnySpoon Five: Eco-Friendly Choices

  1. Go local. Buying local foods, such as veggies from a farmer's market or honey from a local roadside stand, saves a ton of energy - your food won't have to be transported as far to get to you, and you won't have to travel so far to get to it! Wanna try? This Avocado Salad uses 5 ingredients - all of which you should be able to get at your local farmer's market.

  2. Go veggie. As we've mentioned before, going vegetarian, even if for just one day per week, has a positive impact on the environment. It takes less energy to raise veggies than animals (especially considering you have to raise veggies to feed animals), so why not give it a go? Just because something doesn't have meat in it doesn't mean it won't taste good. Try this Savory Pasta & Mushrooms dish tonight and see for yourself!

  3. Recycle your packaging. We are big fans of convenience foods. We're not going to lie. We're busy and we like some of the fantastic prepackaged foods available at the grocery store. However, you'd be suprised at how much of your packaging you can actually recycle. Even if you have to take a bit longer to look at the package and see if your local pick-up will take it, eventually you'll get used to which items can be recycled and it will become second nature to you.

  4. Use less water when cooking pasta. We blogged about it recently, but it's worth repeating. You don't need as much water to cook the pasta as the package says. If you cook with less, you'll save water, time, plus the energy used to heat the water. Everyone wins! Looking for a fab pasta dish? Try the Spinach Fettucine Alfredo & Chicken.

  5. Turn off the heat. Instead of baking a dessert that heats up your kitchen (and uses a lot of energy), opt for no-bake options instead. Like these irresistable Frozen S'mores!

These are really great tips!

As for #3: Recycle your packaging: There are TONS of things that can be recycled so be sure to check with your local recycling group to see what they'll take. My local grocery store recycles plastic bags AND I just learned that they also take all of the plastic bags inside of boxes, too. Like the plastic bag the cereal is in inside the box and the bag inside the box of Nilla Wafers. I was so pleased when I learned this becuase we go through tons of those things at my house!!

Don't forget to check with your local recycling group to see what they'll take. And be sure to check Earth 911, http://earth911.com/, my go-to recycling site!
