The FunnySpoon Five: Canned Foods

If you have a well-stocked pantry then you can usually pull off a super simple dinner without much effort. February marks canned food month so we thought we'd honor it with sharing our favorite canned food pantry stockers with you!

  • Stock
You can add stock to any meal flavor – meat, poultry, pasta, sauces, casseroles, mashed potatoes. Again, stock really helps add flavor and alter the consistency of a dish. Give it a whirl. We always keep a can of Swanson's Chicken Stock and a can of Swanson's Vegetable Stock on hand. And, if you open stock but don’t use it all you can simply fill ice cube trays, freeze it and have it at-the-ready in single use sizes.

  • Beans
Beans are great in soups because they add texture and pack in the protein. We love kidney beans and black beans, but most any variety works. And they’re shelf-stable so they’re there when you’re short on time. Our favorite brand is Bush's ... give 'em a try and let us know what you think.

  • Tomatoes
Canned tomatoes are perfect for pasta, soups, casseroles, mexican, italian, you name it! If you prefer zestier foods, then you should stock a can of diced or fire-roasted tomatoes in your pantry. You can quickly add a ton of flavor to a basic dish with one can.

  • Tuna
As long as you like fish, this is great to have on hand. Salads, sandwiches, patties, pastas, casseroles. Dinner in minutes! We love the Bumblebee Chunk White Albacore Tuna best. It’s high-protein, low-calorie when you get the type that's packed in water. Save those extra calories for chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes!

  • Roasted Red Peppers
These delicious, amazing little gems will add tons of flavor to any pasta, pizza, salad, grilled chicken or fish dish. And they take the "fancy factor" up a few points!! A jar of World Classics Roasted Red Peppers will take you through a few meals so you certainly get a value for your dollar.

It's like you just took a look in MY pantry! I love all of those things and am always amazed at how many simple dinners I can whip up without even having to go to the store - which is great for hectic evenings or last-minute dinners or needing to eat something when you get back late from being out of town!

I tend to get tired of tuna, so I've been stocking up on canned salmon instead. It's delicious to put with a salad or with pasta in a light cream sauce.

I've seen canned salmon before but always was afraid of it. I know that's irrational since I eat canned tuna, so I'm glad to hear it from you - I'll definitely give it a shot!

Haha, I totally know what you mean...I was scared too at first, but it's really delicious. My favorite is pink Alaskan salmon.
